Chelsea open talks over shock Danny Welbeck move

Chelsea are exploring a move to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck this summer.

Chelsea are exploring a move for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck as Xabi Alonso looks to add Premier League experience and leadership to his squad.

The Athletic reports that the 35-year-old, who has one year remaining on his Brighton contract, is admired by Alonso for both his qualities on the pitch and his influence in the dressing room, with early optimism that a deal could be completed.

Welbeck enjoyed the best Premier League scoring season of his career last term, netting 13 goals while featuring in 37 of Brighton’s 38 league matches.

Chelsea’s recent recruitment strategy has shifted towards proven top-flight experience, having also targeted Granit Xhaka and shown interest in free agent John Stones.

The proposed move could reshape Chelsea’s attacking options, with decisions still to be made on the futures of Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha and Marc Guiu.

Brighton are aware of Chelsea’s interest, while discussions remain at an early stage, according to The Athletic.
