Wales have become the first football association to publicly withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for another term as FIFA president.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has become the first national federation to publicly withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president for the 2027-2031 term.
According to BBC Sport, the decision follows growing dissatisfaction over Infantino’s abandoned proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms.
The FAW said recent failures in governance, leadership, stakeholder management, communication and decision-making had eroded its confidence in Infantino’s leadership. It added that failing to put football’s best interests first was a standard it could not accept.
The move comes after UEFA and Concacaf both criticised FIFA’s leadership following the withdrawal of the controversial investment proposal, adding to the mounting pressure surrounding Infantino’s future ahead of the next presidential election.
