Depay misses start of international duty after passport stolen

Memphis Depay missed the start of the Netherlands’ World Cup qualifying camp after his passport was stolen in Brazil.

Memphis Depay has missed the start of international duty with the Netherlands after his passport was stolen in Brazil. The Corinthians forward was scheduled to travel on Sunday evening but was unable to leave the country without the document. As a result, he did not arrive at the national team’s training base in Zeist on Monday.

The Dutch FA confirmed Depay was “doing everything he can” to rejoin the squad “as soon as possible.” Head coach Ronald Koeman said, “This is unfortunate, primarily for Memphis, but also for us. You naturally want to start your international preparations with a full squad.”

The Oranje will face Malta and Finland in World Cup qualifiers this week. Depay, 31, recently became the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer with 52 goals in 104 appearances.
