Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he would not have left Anfield in the manner Trent Alexander-Arnold did after the right-back’s move to Real Madrid. The 25-year-old joined Los Blancos this summer after 20 years at Liverpool, with the Spanish club paying £8.4 million to bring him in early.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Gerrard said: “When Real Madrid come, it’s going to turn your head… but as soon as I put my Liverpool hat back on, I think, what are you doing?”
He acknowledged that fans have a right to express disappointment, describing it as “constructive criticism” but condemned any form of abuse.
Gerrard added that Alexander-Arnold “took a big risk” by leaving during his prime, despite being one of the “best passers” he has seen. “I hope it works for him because I love the kid,” Gerrard said. “I wouldn’t have done it, but he’s good enough to make it work.”
