Bahia captain and former Brazil international Éverton Ribeiro has revealed he underwent surgery for thyroid cancer on Monday.
The 36-year-old midfielder shared the news on Instagram, posting a photo with his family at the Christ the Redeemer statue and writing, “About a month ago, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I had surgery today and everything went well, thank God.”
He added, “I continue my recovery, with faith, the support of my family and all of you. Thank you for every prayer and affection. Having you by my side makes all the difference.”
Ribeiro, who featured in Bahia’s 1-0 league win over Flamengo on Sunday, has received widespread support, including from Brazil’s Football Confederation. “All the strength and positive energy to you, @evertonri,” the CBF wrote, thanking him for honoring the national team jersey at the 2022 World Cup and wishing him a swift recovery.
