Portugal 1-0 Ireland: Ronaldo misses penalty as Neves scores stoppage-time header

Ruben Neves scored a stoppage-time header to secure Portugal’s 1-0 win over Ireland after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in their World Cup qualifier in Lisbon.

Ruben Neves’ stoppage-time header earned Portugal a dramatic 1-0 victory over a stubborn Republic of Ireland side in Lisbon on Saturday, rescuing Roberto Martinez’s men after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty.

Portugal dominated possession but were repeatedly denied by Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who produced several crucial saves. Ronaldo struck the post early on before Bernardo Silva missed the rebound, frustrating the home crowd. The Irish defence, led by Nathan Collins and Dara O’Shea, absorbed wave after wave of pressure, limiting Portugal to long-range efforts.

After 73 minutes, Francisco Trincao’s shot was blocked by O’Shea, and the referee pointed to the spot for handball. Ronaldo, making his 50th World Cup qualifier appearance, saw his penalty saved down the middle by Kelleher’s outstretched leg.

Just when it seemed Portugal would be held to a goalless draw, Trincao swung in a deep cross in the 91st minute, which Neves met with a glancing header to finally beat Kelleher. The midfielder, wearing Diogo Jota’s No. 21 shirt in tribute to his late teammate, was mobbed by his teammates as the Estadio Jose Alvalade erupted.

Martinez’s side remain unbeaten in qualification, while Ireland’s spirited display earned them praise despite the heartbreak. “It was fitting that Neves, playing in Jota’s memory, delivered the winner,” Martinez said after the match.

Portugal now turn their attention to Hungary next week as they continue their march toward the 2026 World Cup.
