Samuel Chukwueze demands respect for AFCON, slams disrespect

Nigeria forward Samuel Chukwueze has defended the importance of the Africa Cup of Nations, arguing it deserves the same international respect as the World Cup despite its disruptive mid-season timing.

Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze has called for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to receive the same global prestige as the FIFA World Cup and the European Championship.

Speaking from Morocco, where the tournament is currently being held, the Fulham winger dismissed criticisms regarding the competition’s quality.

He insisted that despite long-standing debates over its scheduling, the tournament remains one of the premier sporting events in the world.

The timing of this year’s edition—running from December 21 to January 18—has sparked frustration among European clubs who lose key players during a congested domestic period.

Chukwueze acknowledged the logistical friction but maintained that international duty remains a non-negotiable priority for players.

“We understand they scheduled AFCON at the wrong time of the year, but when it’s important, if you get recalled you have to go,” he explained.

The 26-year-old forward emphasized that the significance of the trophy should never be undermined by its calendar placement.

He warned that labeling the event as anything less than elite is “unacceptable” to those participating.

“You have to respect the AFCON the same way you respect the European Championship or World Cup,” Chukwueze stated, as he helped Nigeria secure an opening victory over Tanzania to top Group C
