Alan Shearer has criticized Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior’s decision to hand vice-captain Enzo Fernández a two-game ban, warning that the disciplinary stance could create a difficult precedent for the dressing room.
Liam Rosenior is facing scrutiny after suspending Enzo Fernández for two games following the midfielder’s recent comments hinting at a move to Real Madrid.
While some support the disciplinary action, Alan Shearer believes the manager has “made a rod for his own back.”
Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Shearer noted, “The only problem is that when someone else does it, he will now have to discipline them.”
The ban comes amid frustration over Fernández’s repeated flirtations with an exit, especially given his leadership role.
Critics argue his behavior as vice-captain set a poor example, particularly after Chelsea’s Champions League exit.
However, Shearer remains unconvinced by the severity of the punishment, suggesting that by taking such a public stance, Rosenior may find himself forced to apply the same harsh standards to every future squad indiscretion.
