Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have called for perspective following a narrow 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, a match decided by what Courtois described as “details” that went against the side.
Despite the loss, Courtois remained optimistic about the team’s resilience, stating, “We’re sad, but we have to move on and focus on the Cup and the League… we showed that we’re a lively team and that we could have won,” while also praising Vinicius Jr. for a performance that was a “nightmare” for the opposition.
Alonso echoed this pride in the squad’s fight, though he pragmatically noted that “of all the competitions we have, this is the least important one,” explaining that the decision to bench Kylian Mbappe initially was due to the Frenchman not being “ready to start with the intensity that the game was going to have.”
Both men emphasized that the priority now shifts to recovering injured players and maintaining their domestic momentum, with Alonso concluding that the team must simply “turn the page as quickly as possible” and move forward.
