Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim benched left-back Patrick Dorgu for the recent 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace following a combination of performance anxiety and a controversial social media incident.
According to a report from The Mirror, Amorim made significant tactical changes, notably starting Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot, but the decision to omit Dorgu from the starting XI was due to the manager sensing poor composure in the young defender.
Amorim explained his reasoning, stating that Dorgu was “feeling the pressure of playing for the club,” which impacted “his composure when in possession of the ball.”
Dorgu’s situation was further complicated after he seemingly ‘liked’ an Instagram post that was critical of Amorim’s previous team selections.
This incident is believed to have contributed to the manager’s decision to drop Dorgu, although the left-back did feature as a late substitute during the match.
Despite Amorim’s team selection, Crystal Palace took a deserved 1-0 lead with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a penalty in the 36th minute.
United staged a second-half comeback with goals from Joshua Zirkzee in the 54th minute and Mason Mount, who secured the 2-1 victory just nine minutes later, completing the turnaround and earning the crucial three points.
