Andre Onana Considers Loan Move to Trabzonspor Amidst Manchester United Goalkeeping Shake-Up
September 6, 2025
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is considering a loan move to Trabzonspor after a potential transfer to Galatasaray failed to materialize. This comes amid changes in Manchester United’s goalkeeping lineup following the signing of Senne Lammens. Onana’s future at the club has been uncertain. This is after a series of inconsistent performances and the presence of multiple senior goalkeepers in the squad.
Manchester United's goalkeeper, Andre Onana, is reportedly weighing a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, marking a potential shift in the goalkeeping dynamics at Old Trafford. This consideration comes after Onana was previously linked with Galatasaray, another Turkish club, which ultimately opted to sign Ugurcan Cakir instead. Cakir's move to Galatasaray from Trabzonspor on September 2nd for a deal potentially worth 36 million euros (£31.2 million) has triggered a search for alternatives at Trabzonspor, with club sources suggesting Onana could make a significant impact.
The Turkish transfer window remains open until September 12th, allowing Trabzonspor a limited timeframe to secure Onana's services. Onana is currently on international duty with Cameroon, further complicating the negotiations. The potential departure of either Onana or Altay Bayindir from Manchester United has been a topic of discussion since the club's acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. While Manchester United officials initially indicated a willingness to maintain a senior squad with four goalkeepers, this approach is seemingly at odds with head coach Ruben Amorim's preference for a smaller squad, particularly in the absence of European football.

Currently, Tom Heaton occupies the role of fourth senior goalkeeper within the United squad. Onana's position at Manchester United has been subject to scrutiny. Despite starting the Europa League final defeat against Tottenham, he lost his place to Bayindir after a pre-season injury.
He made his return during the EFL Cup defeat to League Two Grimsby last month. Manchester United signed Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in 2023. Then United boss Erik ten Hag sought a reunion with the goalkeeper. Ten Hag and Onana previously worked together at Ajax. Yet, Onana has struggled to find consistency. This raised questions about the decision to replace David de Gea, a four-time club player of the year.
Several mistakes led to Onana's benching. This came during the Premier League defeat at Newcastle on April 13th. However, he was reinstated for the Europa League quarter-final win over Lyon.
The potential loan move to Trabzonspor signifies a crucial juncture for Onana's career at Manchester United. It also raises questions about the club's long-term goalkeeping strategy. With the Turkish transfer window closing soon, the coming days will be critical in determining whether this move materializes.
