‘Appalling weekend’ sees four Premier League players sent racist abuse on social media

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out and the Premier League have launched investigations after four top-flight players were targeted with racist social media abuse following the weekend’s fixtures.

The Premier League and Kick It Out have condemned an “appalling weekend” that saw four players subjected to vile online racism.

Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri were targeted after Saturday’s draw, while Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle faced abuse on Sunday.

The league warned: “There are serious consequences for anybody found guilty and we will offer the club and player our full support.”

Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare expressed disbelief at the lack of accountability for online trolls following his side’s loss to Crystal Palace.

He took to Instagram to share his frustration, stating: “It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences.”

Sunderland added that such individuals “are not welcome on Wearside.”
