Arne Slot defends Liverpool’s attacking style after Jamie Carragher raises concerns about defensive vulnerabilities. Slot emphasizes the importance of balance and player availability in maintaining control while sticking to an exciting, high-risk approach.
Arne Slot has made it clear: Liverpool will continue to embrace its ultra-attacking philosophy, even after club legend Jamie Carragher voiced concerns about the team's defensive frailties. Carragher's worries stemmed from Liverpool's recent 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, a match that highlighted both the team's offensive prowess and defensive vulnerabilities. Slot, however, remains steadfast in his commitment to an exciting, risk-taking style of play.
The Premier League champions appeared to be cruising in their 2025-26 season opener, with Hugo Ekitike marking his debut with a goal and an assist for Cody Gakpo, putting Liverpool ahead 2-0. But Bournemouth mounted a spirited comeback, led by Antoine Semenyo, who scored two stunning goals. His first came from a pinpoint cross by David Brooks, reducing the deficit to 2-1. Semenyo then embarked on a remarkable solo run, carrying the ball nearly the length of the pitch to score the equalizer.
Despite Bournemouth's resurgence, Liverpool found a second wind and secured the win late in the game. Federico Chiesa scored a brilliant goal in the 88th minute, followed by Mohamed Salah, who sealed the victory with a goal in stoppage time. However, the two goals Bournemouth scored were enough to raise concerns.
Carragher, analyzing the game for Sky Sports, was highly critical of Liverpool's defending. He described their lack of organization for Semenyo's second goal as "absolutely shocking." Indeed, Bournemouth's attacking threat was significant. In the second half, they nearly matched Liverpool's expected goals (xG) figures, generating 0.87 compared to the Reds' 0.89. The Cherries also converted 20 final-third entries into 18 touches in Liverpool's penalty area.
Slot addressed Carragher's comments after the match, pointing to the absence of key midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. Gravenberch had missed the Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace due to becoming a father and was suspended for the Bournemouth game. "I talk about a player who was not available last week or this week. That's Ryan Gravenberch. Last season, he was very, very important in these moments," Slot explained to Sky Sports.
Slot continued, "So with Alexis Mac Allister only being back for two or three weeks, we lost a little bit of that control from our midfield." He added that Gravenberch's return and Mac Allister's increased fitness would help restore balance to the team. Slot also emphasized that taking risks is an inherent part of Liverpool's style: "That's also who we were and who we are, and that's why we see such a nice game if you watch Liverpool. We are not going to a low block to defend."
Carragher responded to Slot's remarks with apprehension, stating, "That worries me a little, you saying that's the team that we are, with bodies flying forward." However, Slot remained resolute, stating, "You're allowed to say this."
Slot added, "But then you need to support a team that plays 11 players in their own box! I prefer to see this. But I prefer even more to not see ourselves counter-attacked – that I agree with." He affirmed his commitment to an attacking brand of football, emphasizing the entertainment value it brings: "I like that our players like to play football. Last season we were a joy to watch. Paris Saint-Germain do similar things to this."
As Liverpool prepares for their upcoming matches, the debate over their defensive approach is likely to continue. The team faces Newcastle United at St James' Park on August 25, followed by a home game against Arsenal on August 31. These games will provide further insight into Slot's tactical approach and whether he can strike a balance between attacking flair and defensive solidity to lead Liverpool to further success.
