Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare have condemned a wave of “abhorrent” racist abuse directed at the striker on social media following a missed penalty in Sunday’s Premier League fixture. The incident, which saw Arokodare share screenshots of the private messages he received, comes during a weekend of heightened racial hostility that also saw Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri targeted after their match at Stamford Bridge.
Expressing his frustration at the lack of accountability, Arokodare wrote on his Instagram story, “It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences,” while Wolves officials vowed to work with the Premier League and police to identify the anonymous offenders. The club reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance, stating, “No player should be subjected to such hatred simply for doing their job,” a sentiment echoed by anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, which called for social media companies to offer better protection to players. These latest attacks follow a disturbing trend in the 2025/26 season, including a BBC investigation that recorded over 2,000 abusive posts in a single weekend, prompting Fofana to criticize the effectiveness of current anti-racism campaigns, noting that “2026, it’s still the same thing, nothing changes.”
