Arsenal Secure Gyokeres in Record Transfer: Add-ons and Controversy Revealed

Arsenal have completed the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in a deal that includes a significant initial fee and performance-based add-ons. The transfer, finalized after a period of intense negotiations and reported rule-breaking by the player, sees Gyokeres move to the Premier League for a reported €63.5 million plus €10 million in add-ons.

The add-ons are structured across three key performance metrics: €1.25 million for every 20 games played (up to €5 million total), €500,000 for every 20 goal contributions (up to €1 million), and €1 million for each season Arsenal qualifies for the Champions League group stage (up to €4 million). This complex structure reflects Arsenal’s strategic approach to managing risk and reward in high-value transfers.

Gyokeres’ transfer was far from straightforward. Reports indicate he refused to return to training for Sporting Lisbon’s pre-season, resulting in a reported 13-day absence. Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, reportedly demanded Gyokeres forgo his July salary as a consequence. Gyokeres accepted this demand to expedite the move to Arsenal.

Despite the controversy surrounding his departure, Gyokeres is expected to maintain any bonuses related to collective and individual objectives achieved during the 2024/25 season with Sporting Lisbon. This includes bonuses linked to the league title and a previously negotiated €500,000 payment for exceeding 50 goals and assists.

The transfer represents a significant investment for Arsenal, who have reportedly prioritized Gyokeres following the arrival of their new sporting director, Andre Berta. The young striker’s impressive goal-scoring record of 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting Lisbon made him a highly sought-after target. The successful acquisition of Gyokeres adds another layer to Arsenal’s ambitious plans for the season ahead.
