Arsenal defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 in a dominant Champions League performance, maintaining their perfect record with goals from Timber, Madueke, and Martinelli, despite an equalizer from Karl.
Arsenal thumped Bayern Munich 3-1 in a clash of the English and German league leaders on Tuesday to maintain their perfect record in the Champions League this season, according to a report from AFP via Yahoo Sports. Both teams entered the match having won four games out of four.
The Gunners went ahead in the 22nd minute when Jurrien Timber headed home a Bukayo Saka corner, with a flailing Manuel Neuer unable to intercept.
This goal, the report notes, “underlined Arsenal’s relentless brilliance from set-pieces.”
However, the Bundesliga team quickly pulled level in the 32nd minute via a strike from 17-year-old Lennart Karl, after former Arsenal player Serge Gnabry laid off a superb diagonal ball from Joshua Kimmich.
The second half saw Arsenal dominate the play, eventually restoring their lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano played a loose ball that substitute Riccardo Calafiori picked up and crossed, allowing fellow substitute Noni Madueke to turn the ball home.
The scoring was rounded off when Gabriel Martinelli took advantage of a huge blunder from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, slotting home after the goalkeeper was stranded well outside his area.
Delirious Arsenal fans marked the victory by taunting Bayern forward Harry Kane, a former Tottenham player, with a chant of “Harry, Harry, what’s the score.” Both clubs remain well placed to finish in the top eight of the 32-team league phase.
