Arthur Okonkwo’s switch from England to Nigeria gets FIFA approval

Arthur Okonkwo has received FIFA approval to switch his allegiance to Nigeria following a standout season with Championship side Wrexham.

FIFA has officially approved a nationality switch for Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, allowing the former Arsenal man to represent Nigeria.

The 24-year-old previously played for England at the u15, u16, u17, and u18 levels between 2015 and 2018.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo opted to change his international allegiance after several years without a call-up from the English Football Association, making him immediately available for the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reportedly tracked the goalkeeper’s progress throughout his successful tenure at Wrexham.

Since joining the club in 2023, Okonkwo has been instrumental in their rise from League Two to the Championship.

He has started 21 consecutive games in the English second tier this season, establishing himself as a key figure as Wrexham pushes for a playoff spot and a potential promotion to the Premier League.

Okonkwo’s availability comes at a transitional time for Nigeria, following their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

While the NFF has not yet confirmed a specific date for his first senior call-up, his consistent performance in a high-level league is expected to bolster his case.

If Wrexham secures promotion, Okonkwo could soon be competing in the Premier League, further cementing his status as a top choice for his new national team.
