Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has taken aim at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, calling the European Super League “a dead project” that only persists because of Perez’s influence in Spain.
Speaking to EFE during the European Football Clubs general assembly in Rome, Gil Marin said the league “is only being talked about in Spain” due to Real Madrid’s importance and Perez’s role as its “driving force.” He added, “In Europe, it’s long been considered a dead project.”
The Atletico executive emphasized that UEFA’s upcoming 2027–31 cycle for competition formats, sponsorship, and TV rights had already been agreed upon collectively, showing unity among clubs. “They are completely opposite to what the Super League model proposed,” he noted.
Gil Marin, a vocal critic of both Real Madrid and Barcelona’s earlier Super League ambitions, expressed satisfaction that Joan Laporta attended the Rome assembly, saying it was vital for Barcelona to rejoin discussions on European football’s future.
