Manchester City’s ambitious attempt to acquire Barcelona’s Jules Kounde has been swiftly rejected. Their offer, reportedly €60m plus €10m in add-ons, was deemed insufficient by Barcelona, who have slapped a €1bn price tag on the defender. This effectively shuts down any realistic chance of a transfer this summer.
Meanwhile, City are busy bolstering their squad elsewhere. They’ve already spent £125m on new signings, including Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Air-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan, and Marcus Bettinelli. The club has also agreed to re-sign goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley for £27m, beating out Newcastle United’s offer.
While City strengthens their goalkeeping ranks, their pursuit of a new right-back continues. Kounde remains a top target for manager Pep Guardiola, but Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have made it clear that only a €1bn release clause payment will secure the French international’s transfer. This astronomical figure renders a move to the Etihad Stadium highly unlikely.
Other clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal, are also reportedly interested in Kounde, further highlighting the player’s high demand. Chelsea has also made offers to Barcelona for unspecified players, showcasing the busy summer transfer window activity.
