SL Benfica has suspended five members and faces potential player sanctions following a UEFA investigation into racist abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.
SL Benfica has suspended five members and revoked their season tickets following an internal inquiry into racist abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. during their February 17 match.
The club initiated disciplinary proceedings that could result in permanent expulsion.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica reaffirms that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act firmly,” the club stated.
Additionally, Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni faces a potential ten-game ban after being provisionally suspended by UEFA for allegedly calling the Brazilian forward a “monkey.”
The incident, which also involved fans in the stands making racist gestures, has drawn widespread condemnation.
The investigation remains ongoing as UEFA evaluates further sanctions against the player and the club regarding these “incompatible” and discriminatory behaviors.
