The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has formally petitioned FIFA and UEFA to implement severe punishments following alleged racial abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior during a Champions League match against Benfica.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has demanded “rigorous” punishments following alleged racial abuse against Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior during Tuesday’s Champions League tie.
President Samir Xaud urged FIFA and UEFA to “identify and punish” those responsible.
The incident involving Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni led referee Francois Letexier to suspend play for 10 minutes, triggering further racist insults and monkey noises from the Lisbon crowd.
Benfica coach Jose Mourinho faced “gaslighting” accusations from Kick It Out after dismissing the claims.
Mourinho stated: “I told (Vinícius), when you score a goal like that you just celebrate and walk back. They (Vinícius and Prestianni) told me different things. But I don’t believe in one or another. I want to be an independent.”
UEFA’s ethics investigation could take three weeks to conclude.
