Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is facing intense scrutiny and accusations of racism and sexism after stating that defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi “is a black guy but he will get out of my room as a white guy,” while also calling the player’s female agent “a nice little woman who is his agent and thinks she knows football.”
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is facing serious backlash and accusations of racism and sexism following reported derogatory comments about defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and his agent.
The controversy stems from Mbokazi’s delayed arrival at a national team camp, which Broos cited as another example of an “unprofessional attitude” among South African players, prompting the coach’s public outburst.
Broos expressed his extreme displeasure with the player, making a comment that has since drawn immense scrutiny for its racially coded nature.
He stated: “So, I will have a chat with him after training and I can assure you he’s a black guy but he will get out of my room as a white guy because that I can’t accept.
But I know why, suddenly Mboki is a star – he thinks he’s a star. This is the attitude of a star, ‘I decide when I will come,’.”
The coach further disparaged Mbokazi’s imminent transfer to Chicago Fire in the MLS and publicly attacked the player’s agent, Basia Michaels.
Broos asserted: “I know what happened – a nice little woman who is his agent and thinks she knows football is doing what many agents are doing, ‘How much can I get,’.”
He concluded that the move to Chicago was “not a good choice” for the 19-year-old.
