The killing of cartel leader “El Mencho” has triggered a wave of violence across Mexico, sparking urgent security debates only months before the country co-hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mexican security forces are on high alert following the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes during a military operation.
The kingpin’s death on Sunday sparked nationwide unrest, resulting in over 70 fatalities and widespread blockades.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener in Mexico City just four months away, international concerns are mounting over the safety of host cities.
Despite the chaos, some analysts believe cartels may self-regulate to protect their own hospitality investments.
Regarding the economic impact, Javier Eskauriatza noted, “It is useful for them if Brits, Americans, and others go to Mexico, spend their money and have a good time.”
Nevertheless, major airlines have temporarily suspended flights to Jalisco as the government faces pressure to stabilize the region before fans arrive.
