Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior justified his decision to start Filip Jorgensen over Robert Sanchez as a tactical move designed to bypass PSG’s high press, despite the goalkeeper’s mistake leading to a 5-2 defeat.
Liam Rosenior defended his “bold” choice to start Filip Jorgensen in Chelsea’s 5-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, citing the Dane’s superior distribution.
While acknowledging Sanchez as an “outstanding shot-stopper,” Rosenior preferred Jorgensen’s composure under pressure.
“Filip has different qualities… we were so calm in our possession moments,” Rosenior explained. He aimed to exploit PSG’s aggressive pressing by building attacks from the back.
The strategy proved disastrous as Jorgensen’s poor pass gifted PSG a 3-2 lead, sparking a late collapse.
Statistical data highlighted the struggle, with PSG scoring five goals from an expected goals (xG) value of just 0.87.
“It’s just painful that we’ve made that mistake in that moment,” Rosenior admitted. Chelsea now face a daunting task to overturn the three-goal deficit in next week’s second leg.
