Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet has advised the club to prioritise improving their Premier League form instead of chasing Champions League glory.
According to Sports Mole reporting, former Chelsea star Gus Poyet has urged Enzo Maresca’s side to focus on their Premier League campaign rather than aiming for Champions League success this season.
Poyet, who won four trophies with the Blues, said Chelsea must “settle down in the Premier League” as they sit seventh in the table after 10 matches, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. The London side travel to face Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday, having already beaten Benfica and Ajax at home but lost heavily to Bayern Munich.
Asked if Chelsea could win the Champions League, Poyet replied: “Well, if you base it on what they’ve done three months ago, yes. But it’s a long way. I think Chelsea now need to settle down in the Premier League – they need to aim to be closer to the top.”
He added, “I think the teams need to concentrate on the Premier League. Then these international tournaments, the teams have different levels and maybe it’s the coach’s ability to manage how to play, but Chelsea need to play to win trophies. So this is another opportunity.”
Poyet spoke to Sports Mole on behalf of BetWright.
