Chelsea star secures rights to ‘Cold Palmer’ brand, can now sell teddy bears and soaps

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has officially secured the trademark for ‘Cold Palmer’ after resolving a legal dispute with a French vineyard, paving the way for him to market a range of branded products.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has been granted the trademark for ‘Cold Palmer’ following a legal dispute with a French vineyard that opposed his initial application.

The England international applied last November to trademark both his “ice cold” celebration and the name ‘Cold Palmer’ for commercial use across multiple product categories, including clothes, food, toiletries, alcohol, and toys.

However, his application faced opposition from Château Palmer, a prestigious vineyard in Bordeaux’s Margaux region, which argued that the trademark could harm its image. The winery, whose bottles sell for up to £750, reportedly won part of the case, prompting Palmer’s legal team to amend the submission by removing references to wine.

Weeks later, the UK’s Intellectual Property Office approved Palmer’s revised application, allowing him to sell a wide variety of branded goods — from soaps and bath salts to teddy bears, Christmas crackers, and even underwater vehicles. The trademark is valid until November 2034 and can be renewed for another decade.

Sebastian Stewart, a lawyer at Bristows LLP, told The Athletic: “What they’ve obviously done is they’ve cast the net really wide, which isn’t uncommon for trademarks.”

Palmer is also seeking to trademark his shivering goal celebration, which he says “symbolises joy, passion and hard determination for the game.” The gesture, which gained fame after his goal against Luton in December 2023, was inspired by former Manchester City academy teammate Morgan Rogers.
