Chelsea in talks with Maignan after Barcelona triumph

After a commanding Champions League victory over Barcelona, Chelsea are reportedly in talks with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who is eager to join the London club.

Chelsea have reopened talks with the representatives of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, just days after their emphatic 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Chelsea have opened talks with the representatives of a big-name player after their triumph over Barcelona in the Champions League, according to a report from Sky Switzerland reporter Sacha Tavolieri.

The news comes as Enzo Maresca’s side celebrates a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, a victory described as a “scintillating performance” that “dismantling Barça.”

Maignan, who has long been a target for Chelsea, is entering a critical period as his contract at the San Siro is set to expire at the end of this season, meaning he could potentially be available for “zero cost.”

Tavolieri reports that the French international is now edging closer to departing AC Milan, as he has reportedly informed the club he will not sign a new deal, despite the club offering improved terms that would double his current salary.

BlueCo, the club’s ownership group, is “seizing on a developing contract standoff,” positioning Chelsea favourably. The France number one can begin formal discussions with foreign clubs from January onwards.

Maresca reportedly views the experienced shot-stopper as a potential solution to the club’s ongoing goalkeeping concerns, with neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen—who could leave in January—fully convincing the manager.

Crucially, Maignan is also “very keen” on the idea of joining Chelsea. The former Lille star is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top shot-stoppers, with Liverpool’s Alisson describing him as a world-class keeper, stating:

“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world.”
