Japan became the first Asian nation to defeat England as Kaoru Mitoma’s clinical strike condemned Thomas Tuchel’s sluggish side to a 1-0 loss in their final World Cup warm-up.
Japan made history on Tuesday, emerging as 1-0 winners at Wembley against a rotated and uninspired England side.
Kaoru Mitoma scored the decisive goal in the first half, punishing a lapse in possession by Cole Palmer.
Despite Palmer later hitting the bar and late pressure from substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jarrod Bowen, the Three Lions failed to penetrate a disciplined Japanese defense and organized midfield.
The result leaves Thomas Tuchel facing intense scrutiny less than 100 days before England’s World Cup opener against Croatia.
Boos rang around Wembley at full-time as fans reacted to a performance described as “slow on the ball” with “very little chance of penetrating.”
While Zion Suzuki impressed in goal for the visitors, England’s lack of urgency and defensive cohesion raised serious tournament concerns.
