Crystal Palace may be compelled to sell their captain, Marc Guehi, before the transfer window closes, as Liverpool shows strong interest. Chairman Steve Parish acknowledged the possibility given Guehi's contract situation at Selhurst Park.
Guehi, a key player for Palace, has less than a year remaining on his contract and hasn't indicated a willingness to extend his stay. This situation has attracted attention from Liverpool, who are considering bolstering their defense, especially with Ibrahima Konate's potential departure next year.
Guehi recently led Crystal Palace to a penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool in the Community Shield, underscoring his value to the team. He showcased his defensive prowess by making the most clearances and winning the joint-most aerial duels for Palace.
When questioned about potential offers for Guehi, valued around £40 million, Parish stated that the club would have to consider them. Losing a player of Guehi's caliber on a free transfer would pose a significant financial challenge for Crystal Palace.
Parish noted that the club previously sold Joachim Andersen to Fulham and couldn't afford to lose both him and Guehi. He also mentioned a prior bid for Guehi in January, highlighting the ongoing interest in the defender.
Oliver Glasner, Palace's manager, has voiced concerns about the club's transfer activity, describing it as "passive." The club has only added goalkeeper Walter Benitez and left-back Borna Sosa, both expected to be backup players, ahead of the new season.
Parish admitted the challenges in securing high-quality players due to financial constraints. He emphasized that Crystal Palace would strive to improve the squad within their means.
Crystal Palace is scheduled to play Chelsea in their Premier League opener, while Liverpool will host Bournemouth in their first match of the season.
