Didi Hamann: Kompany could replace Guardiola at Man City

Didi Hamann speculates that Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is the most likely candidate to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the future, despite Kompany’s recent contract extension with Bayern.

Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool star, Dietmar Hamann, has stirred speculation by suggesting that Bayern Munich’s recent decision to extend manager Vincent Kompany’s contract was prompted by the fear of losing him to Manchester City.

According to Sky Germany and Bild reporting, Hamann believes the Bundesliga champions acted quickly to ward off potential future interest from Kompany’s former club, where he is widely regarded as a natural successor to Pep Guardiola.

Kompany, who only took charge of Bayern in the summer, had already signed a deal running until 2027. However, the club recently secured his commitment for an additional two years, extending his contract until 2029—a move that Hamann views as significant given Guardiola’s uncertain long-term future at City.

Writing in his column, Hamann expressed his view that the urgency behind the extension was directly linked to the Premier League champions:

“FC Bayern extended Kompany’s contract until 2029, even though he still had 20 months left on his contract. I mean, the extension wasn’t a must, but I understand why they did it,” he wrote.

Hamann continued by elaborating on the suspected motivation from the Bayern hierarchy. “Bayern probably have in mind that Manchester City will be interested in Kompany at some point when Pep Guardiola retires,” Hamann stated.

He added that the critical question now revolves around the specifics of Kompany’s new terms, including whether a special provision exists to facilitate a move back to the Etihad Stadium.

“It would be interesting to know if Kompany has a clause in his contract,” he concluded, referencing that the club’s sporting director did not outright deny such a clause.
