President Donald Trump has dismissed the impact of a potential Iranian boycott of the 2026 World Cup as FIFA prepares contingency plans involving Iraq or the UAE.
U.S. President Donald Trump has shrugged off reports that Iran may withdraw from this summer’s World Cup due to escalating Middle East conflicts.
Following recent military strikes, the co-hosting president expressed indifference toward the move. “I really don’t care.
I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes,” Trump stated, as FIFA monitors the situation with less than 100 days remaining.
If Iran withdraws under “force majeure” regulations, Iraq or the UAE are favored to fill the vacancy.
FIFA officials have already held preliminary discussions regarding potential replacements to ensure a safe, full-strength tournament.
While Iranian FA head Mehdi Taj admitted hopes are fading, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom noted, “Our focus is to have a safe World Cup with everybody participating.”
