Gianluigi Donnarumma expresses disappointment after being left out of PSG’s Super Cup squad, hinting at a potential departure. Manchester United and Manchester City had previously shown interest in the goalkeeper. Manager Luis Enrique confirmed his decision to drop Donnarumma, citing a preference for a different goalkeeper profile.
Gianluigi Donnarumma has voiced his profound disappointment and disheartened feelings after being seemingly frozen out of Paris Saint-Germain's plans, particularly regarding their UEFA Super Cup squad. The Italian goalkeeper, who is 26 years old, played a pivotal role in PSG's historic Champions League triumph, marking their first-ever title in the competition. He also delivered outstanding performances during their journey to the Club World Cup final.
Donnarumma's journey with PSG began in July 2021, when he made a free transfer from AC Milan. Since then, he has maintained an impressive record of 32 clean sheets in 104 Ligue 1 appearances. He has also secured four consecutive league titles with the Parisian club, in addition to winning two Coupe de France trophies.
Speculation surrounding Donnarumma's future intensified when Manchester United reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the talented goalkeeper. The rumors of a potential departure gained further traction when Pep Guardiola's Manchester City were also linked as admirers of Donnarumma.
In a recent statement released on social media, Donnarumma addressed his situation at the club, effectively confirming his impending exit from PSG. He stated, "From day one, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly, both on and off the field, to earn my place and defend the Paris Saint-Germain goal."
He continued, "Unfortunately, a decision has been made that I am no longer part of the group and cannot contribute to the team's success. I am profoundly disappointed and disheartened by this decision."
Donnarumma expressed his desire to bid farewell to the PSG fans in person, saying, "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye in the right way. If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it."
Ahead of PSG's Super Cup showdown against Tottenham, manager Luis Enrique confirmed that the decision to exclude Donnarumma from the squad was his own. He cited a desire for a different "profile" of goalkeeper as the reason behind the decision.
Enrique stated, "Donnarumma is out of the squad as it's my own decision. I am 100% responsible for this. I have the full support of my club, and we are working together to find the best solution for the team."
He added, "It is a difficult decision, and I only have praise for Donnarumma. He is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world and an even better person. However, we were looking for a different profile for our goalkeeper, and these types of decisions are never easy to make."
