Gianluigi Donnarumma welcomes competition with James Trafford for the No. 1 spot at Manchester City, emphasizing the benefits of a strong, united team. The Italian is eager to embrace the Premier League challenge and contribute to the club’s success.
Gianluigi Donnarumma has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming competition with James Trafford for the coveted No. 1 goalkeeping position at Manchester City. The Italian international believes that this rivalry will ultimately benefit both players and contribute to the team's overall success.
The 26-year-old Donnarumma recently completed a £30 million (€35 million) transfer from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the transfer window. This move raised eyebrows, especially considering that Manchester City had already acquired James Trafford from Burnley for £27 million just a month earlier.
Trafford initially stepped into the starting role following Ederson's £14 million departure to Fenerbahce. However, his debut season has been marred by inconsistencies, most notably his error that led to João Palhinha's goal in Tottenham's 2-0 victory over City.
Donnarumma, acknowledging the situation, emphasized the positive aspects of healthy competition. "I am happy because competition is good for everyone," he stated. "I can't wait to meet James and my new teammates. We have to be a strong and united group with people who care for each other; that is the key to success. Together, we can achieve great things."

Beyond the goalkeeping competition, Donnarumma expressed his excitement about joining Manchester City and immersing himself in the club's culture. "I want to enjoy everything, get to know the city and new people, and my new teammates," he said. "I'm looking forward to discovering the environment of the stadium and hearing the sounds of the fans."
Donnarumma participated in his first training session with Guardiola's squad on Thursday. The manager is contemplating whether to include him in the upcoming Manchester derby against Manchester United, marking the 167th edition of the rivalry.
"Playing in the Premier League with Manchester City is a great emotion for me, and I'm ready for this challenge," Donnarumma added. "I've always dreamed about playing in the Premier League, as it's the best league in the world. Achieving in the Premier League is the maximum for his career, therefore I’m really happy to be here. I’m willing to take to the pitch for this club who has been trying so much to sign me and I hope I can pay that trust back."
Donnarumma's arrival is part of City's significant summer transfer activity, which also includes Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki (currently injured), and Rayan Aït-Nouri.
