Dreadful Barcelona hammered 4-1 by inspired Sevilla

Barcelona’s unbeaten La Liga record was shattered in a humiliating 4-1 away defeat to Sevilla, a deserved loss marked by a dreadful performance and a crucial missed penalty by Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona’s unbeaten run in La Liga came to a crashing end on Sunday after a 4-1 defeat to Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The Catalans slipped to second place heading into the international break after what many described as their worst performance under Hansi Flick.

Sevilla took the lead inside 15 minutes when Alexis Sánchez converted a controversial penalty following Isaac Romero’s fall under Ronald Araujo’s challenge. Rubén Vargas later set up Romero for an easy tap-in, leaving Barça reeling. Marcus Rashford briefly revived hopes with a superb volley from Pedri’s cross before halftime.

The visitors looked improved after the break but squandered chances, including Robert Lewandowski’s missed penalty. Youngster Roony Bardghji also failed to convert two clear openings. Sevilla punished their wastefulness as José Ángel Carmona struck late, before Chidera Ejuke set up Akor Adams for a final tap-in.

New signing Wojciech Szczesny’s saves prevented further damage, but the result leaves Flick under pressure after a week of disappointing performances.
