Eddie Howe praises record-signing Nick Woltemade’s impact and believes the striker can handle increased pressure from injuries, despite the team still adapting to his style.
Newcastle United’s attacking resources are severely stretched as they head into a crucial period, including a match against Brentford, with star striker Nick Woltemade carrying the full goalscoring burden.
According to Shields Gazette reporting, citing Eddie Howe’s press conference, the manager has confirmed that summer signing Yoane Wissa remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
Wissa, a £55 million acquisition from Brentford, is yet to make his debut for the Magpies after sustaining the injury on international duty. Providing an update, Howe confirmed Wissa’s return is still distant:
“I’d say he’s not close to training with the group due to fitness. I’m not trying to be evasive, but I don’t know when the moment will be when he’s back with the squad.”
Howe acknowledged the difficult mental challenge for the forward: “He has a very strong character… that’s a real tough mental challenge for him to take on, especially with his transfer fee.”
The injury crisis is compounded by a slight ankle issue for third-choice forward Will Osula, forcing Howe to manage the Danish youngster’s minutes.
This reliance highlights the strong start made by German striker Woltemade, who arrived for a club-record fee and has netted six goals in 11 appearances across all competitions.
Howe was full of praise for the German’s early impact: “It is early days. Time will tell. We are pleased with Nick, on and off the pitch he has been first class… He has an ability to score goals and be in the right position.” Woltemade’s form has been vital as the club juggles domestic and European commitments.
The pressure remains on the 23-year-old to lead the line until his fellow strikers can return to share the load. The absence of Wissa will be keenly felt, particularly against his former club.
