Mikel Merino scored a late winner as Spain beat Belgium 2-1 to reach the World Cup semi-finals, where they’ll face France.
Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring for Spain, pouncing on a rebound after Thibaut Courtois spilled a Dani Olmo effort, before Charles De Ketelaere levelled for Belgium, according to the Evening Standard.
Courtois was then forced off with a thigh injury, replaced by Manchester United’s Senne Lammens for his World Cup debut.
Substitute Mikel Merino proved decisive three minutes from time, converting after Lammens parried a Pau Cubarsi effort into his path.
Spain now advance to face France, who beat Morocco 2-0 in Thursday’s other quarter-final, in the semi-finals.
