Peterborough United have sacked manager Darren Ferguson after a dismal start to the League One season left them bottom of the table.
Peterborough United have dismissed manager Darren Ferguson after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool left the club rooted to the bottom of League One, according to BBC Sport.
The 53-year-old, son of Sir Alex Ferguson, was in his fourth spell as Posh boss and had guided them to four promotions and an EFL Trophy during his time in charge. However, a run of three wins from 13 games this season proved costly.
Club chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “I have made the decision to terminate Darren Ferguson’s contract after today’s game. The decision wasn’t taken lightly but it’s the correct one for the football club.”
He described Ferguson as “the greatest manager in the club’s history” and praised his contribution, adding: “There are too many wonderful moments to mention but I will cherish and remember them forever.”
Ferguson’s latest tenure began in January 2023, overseeing 161 matches, winning 73 and losing 55. Despite near play-off finishes in recent seasons, the team’s form nosedived following the summer departures of key players.
Six defeats in their opening seven league fixtures set the tone for a miserable campaign. Ferguson departs with the team five points adrift of safety, as Peterborough begin their search for a new manager to salvage their season.
