FIFA president Gianni Infantino has expressed “full confidence” in Mexico’s ability to host the 2026 World Cup, dismissing speculation that games will be moved despite recent cartel-related unrest.
FIFA has reaffirmed its commitment to Mexico as a co-host for the 2026 World Cup, despite a recent surge in cartel-related violence.
Following the death of a prominent drug lord, unrest has impacted several regions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed these concerns directly, stating,
“I had an excellent conversation earlier today with Mexico president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and I reiterated our full confidence in the host country.”
While FIFA acknowledges its contractual authority to “cancel, reschedule or relocate one or more matches” for security reasons, the organization remains focused on maintaining the tournament schedule.
Mexican officials have also vowed that there is “no risk” to visitors.
Despite isolated cancellations of smaller sporting events, preparations for the upcoming World Cup fixtures in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey continue to proceed as planned.
