Flick criticises Araujo’s red card in Chelsea loss

Hansi Flick has vowed to sit down with Ronald Araújo after what he described as an “unnecessary” first-half red card that contributed to FC Barcelona’s 3–0 defeat to Chelsea FC.

According to a report from Goal.com, Barcelona’s recent 3–0 defeat at Stamford Bridge was made considerably worse after Ronald Araújo was sent off in the first half — a decision which manager Hansi Flick has described as avoidable.

The red card came following two bookings: the first for dissent, the second for a heavy challenge on Marc Cucurella just before the interval.

Flick admitted that Araújo’s dismissal “fundamentally changed the dynamic” of the match, rendering a comeback virtually impossible for the Catalan side.

“I don’t know what happened with the first yellow card,” Flick said. “I have to talk to him and see the videos, and the second one shouldn’t have gone in like that.”

Despite the heavy loss, Flick tried to salvage optimism around Barcelona’s European hopes, stating his belief that improvement is possible in their remaining Champions League fixtures — though he acknowledged the challenge ahead given how the red card disrupted their performance.

As the club processes this setback, Flick’s promised personal debrief with Araújo signals a moment of introspection.

Whether the defender’s lapse becomes a turning point or a recurring weakness remains to be seen — but for now, Barcelona’s simmering frustrations are laid bare.
