David Gowans, a 31-year-old member of the “Ultras Aberdeen” supporter group, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after throwing a broken plastic seat that severely injured Aberdeen defender Jack MacKenzie.
The incident occurred following a match against Dundee United in May 2025, leaving MacKenzie with permanent disfigurement, including a deep laceration to his eye and facial abrasions.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Sheriff Alastair Carmichael imposed a ten-year football banning order, describing Gowans’ behavior as “selfish, stupid, dangerous and utterly irresponsible.”
Though the defense argued that Gowans was “extremely embarrassed” by his actions and had proactively confessed to a supporter liaison officer that “the chair was me,” the court prioritized the severity of the injury and the potential for sparking a wider crowd disturbance in its ruling.
