Gennaro Gattuso departs as Italy Head Coach following World Cup qualification failure

Gennaro Gattuso has stepped down as Italy’s head coach following a devastating playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking the third consecutive time the four-time champions have failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Gennaro Gattuso has exited his role as Italy manager following the nation’s failure to reach the 2026 World Cup.

The Azzurri lost Tuesday’s playoff final on penalties, confirming a third straight tournament absence. Gattuso’s departure follows the resignations of FIGC president Gabriele Gravina and delegation head Gianluigi Buffon.

Gattuso stated: “With a heavy heart, having failed to achieve the goal we had set ourselves, I consider my time in charge of the national team to be over.”

Appointed last June to replace Luciano Spalletti, Gattuso led Italy to five group-stage wins before the playoff heartbreak.

The 10-man Italian side surrendered a lead in Bosnia, eventually crumbling in the shootout.

Reflecting on his brief tenure, the former midfielder added: “It has been an honour to lead the national team, and to do so with a group of lads who have shown commitment and loyalty to the shirt.”
