Anthony Gordon returned from injury to start for Newcastle United in their 2-1 Champions League loss to Marseille, with Eddie Howe explaining tactical decisions regarding his strikers.
According to a report from the Shields Gazette by Dominic Scurr, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was forced to defend his selection choices following the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Marseille on Tuesday night, which saw Anthony Gordon lead the line instead of Nick Woltemade.
Gordon had missed Newcastle’s previous two matches and international duty with England due to a hip injury but was returned directly to the starting line-up at Stade Velodrome.
Howe had hinted at the change prior to the match, acknowledging all options were available. On Gordon’s fitness, Howe stated:
“He had a minor injury. I don’t think it was a serious injury, but it was enough to keep him out. Especially with explosive players, you’ve got to be really careful with muscle injuries that doesn’t become a longer-term problem. But he’s done the work, he’s fully fit.”
Following the loss, Howe was challenged on why Newcastle did not start “with a striker.” The Magpies boss bluntly responded in reference to Gordon: “We had a striker on the pitch here.”
When pressed further on why Woltemade was named on the bench, Howe confirmed it was a rotation decision ahead of their upcoming Premier League trip to Everton.
He added: “To rest and rotate Nick because physically he’s giving a lot. To make sure he’s already fit and available, established on the line and we have to be very careful with his load.
Also, when he plays, I want him fresh and able to give his very best. He’s had a really intense period. He did well when he came on though, I thought he helped our performance.”
