Bruno Guimaraes scored a last-gasp winner, securing a 2-1 victory for Newcastle over Fulham and extending the Cottagers’ Premier League losing streak to four matches.
Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner against Fulham to secure a vital 2-1 victory, extending the Cottagers’ Premier League losing streak to four games, according to The Independent.
The Magpies, playing in front of a crowd of 52,125, endured a frustrating afternoon where they “once again misfired” in front of goal.
Newcastle initially took the lead in the 18th minute when Jacob Murphy dispossessed Calvin Bassey and steered the ball past goalkeeper Bernd Leno and in off the far post.
Despite a bright start that saw early shots hit the woodwork, the home side “were unable to build on it” and allowed Fulham to gain momentum, conceding an equalizer 11 minutes after the restart.
Fulham’s leveller came in the 56th minute when Sasa Lukic headed home a rebound past Nick Pope, following a Raul Jimenez shot that crashed against the crossbar.
Lukic’s goal, which came after the introduction of half-time substitute Kevin added “fresh vigour” to Fulham’s efforts, “set up a tense conclusion” to the match.
Guimaraes redeemed himself after “earlier wast[ing] a glorious opportunity” with a free header. The winning goal arrived in the final minute of regular time: the Brazil international pounced after Leno had saved a shot from substitute Will Osula, sealing the 2-1 result and getting Newcastle “out of jail”.
