Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed deep frustration over VAR and refereeing decisions following a 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, specifically targeting a rejected penalty appeal and a first-half red card.
Hansi Flick tore into the officiating after Barcelona’s quarter-final defeat, questioning the utility of video technology.
The manager was incensed by a second-half incident where Marc Pubill handled the ball in the box, which Flick believed warranted a penalty and a red card.
He told Movistar Plus, “I don’t know why VAR hasn’t been used. We all make mistakes, but what’s the point of VAR?”
The Catalan side played with ten men after Pau Cubarsi was dismissed for a professional foul late in the first half.
While Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured Atletico’s first win at the Camp Nou in two decades, Flick remained fixated on the controversial officiating.
Addressing the lack of a penalty call for handball, the German coach added, “I just can’t understand it. This is exactly what shouldn’t happen.”
