Former Barcelona midfielder Emmanuel Petit has slammed Hansi Flick’s tactical approach following a 2-0 Champions League home defeat to Atlético Madrid, claiming the team’s high defensive line remains a fatal weakness.
Emmanuel Petit has heavily criticized Barcelona’s performance after their damaging first-leg loss to Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou.
The Frenchman argued that Hansi Flick’s side continues to repeat historical tactical errors, particularly regarding their aggressive defensive positioning.
“I love watching Barça. But once again, they shot themselves in the foot,” Petit told RMC Sport, adding that the squad lacks the profiles to play such a high line.
The defeat leaves Barcelona facing a monumental task at the Wanda Metropolitano following goals from Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth.
Despite early dominance, a red card for teenager Pau Cubarsí shifted the momentum in favor of Diego Simeone’s clinical side.
Reflecting on the recurring defensive lapses that have plagued the Catalans in Europe, Petit noted, “Barça still hasn’t learned from its mistakes.”
