Hansi Flick’s unconvincing explanation for his red card

Hansi Flick was dismissed for dissent after sarcastically applauding the match official’s decision on stoppage time, leading to a crucial suspension.

The Barcelona manager will be forced to watch the upcoming El Clásico against Real Madrid from the stands after receiving a controversial late red card during Saturday’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Catalan rivals Girona.

The incident occurred in the 90th minute when, with the score tied 1-1 and Barcelona desperately seeking a winner, the fourth official signalled just four minutes of added time. Flick was initially shown a yellow card for sarcastically applauding the decision.

He was then immediately shown a second yellow, leading to a red, for vehemently protesting the initial booking, which included shouting and swiping his arm.

Flick attempted to defend his actions post-match, but his explanation was viewed as unconvincing. “Frenkie was there, I said: ‘Come on, Frenkie.’ Honestly, I wasn’t going for the referee,” he argued, continuing, “I clapped to cheer on my team.”

However, the dismissal carries major consequences, as it ensures the 60-year-old German tactician will be absent from the touchline for next Sunday’s crucial fixture against rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

In a dramatic final twist, Ronald Araújo snatched all three points for the home side in the 93rd minute, prompting an emotional, celebratory gesture from the already dismissed Flick near the tunnel.

“The celebration wasn’t for anyone, I just celebrated the goal,” Flick maintained, accepting the forthcoming ban. Barcelona will reportedly not appeal the sanction.
