Scott McTominay possesses exactly the traits manager Ruben Amorim desperately needs at Old Trafford, according to a report from The Mirror, citing comments made by former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who departed United for Napoli in the summer of 2024, has been “one of Serie A’s outstanding performers” and secured the Serie A title in his first year in Italy, even receiving recognition with a Ballon d’Or nomination.
McTominay recently capped off an exceptional 12 months by netting a “stunning opener” during Scotland’s 4-2 victory against Denmark, a result that helped guide the Tartan Army to their first World Cup since 1998.
The goal itself, a “remarkable bicycle kick,” was compared by Ighalo to something “Cristiano Ronaldo does!”
United’s decision to offload the player may now be under question, particularly as Amorim is understood to be making a new midfielder his “top priority,” with the club currently sitting 10th in the Premier League standings.
Ighalo, 36, is convinced that the midfielder’s specific skillset is missing from the current United squad. “It’s funny because his style is probably something which Man United need now; he runs, he tackles, he works hard and he scores goals,” Ighalo told Ladbrokes.
He praised the midfielder’s humble nature and quick thinking, adding that McTominay “will happily take shots on first time, rather than controlling the ball and slowing things down.”
Ighalo suggested McTominay’s exit was due to poor timing: “You know, he’s doing so well since he left the club, but he had to leave because there were just too many players in his position around the place at the time.”
