Italy, Nigeria, Cameroon headline list of giants missing 2026 FIFA World Cup

Multiple football powerhouses, including four-time winners Italy and African giants Nigeria and Cameroon, have sensationally failed to qualify for the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The global football landscape faces a seismic shift as several traditional “giants” failed to secure their spots for the 2026 World Cup.

Italy headlines the casualties, remarkably missing their third consecutive tournament after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This unprecedented drought for the 12th-ranked Azzurri signals a deep institutional crisis, leaving the four-time champions as spectators for over a decade.

Africa’s representation also took a massive hit with the absence of Nigeria and Cameroon. The Super Eagles’ star-studded squad, featuring Victor Osimhen, fell to DR Congo in a tense CAF playoff.

Similarly, the Indomitable Lions were silenced, depriving the tournament of two of the continent’s most iconic competitors.

Their exit raises urgent questions about the shifting power dynamics within African football as newer forces emerge.

Europe saw further exits as Denmark and Poland joined the list of absentees. Denmark’s consistent tournament run ended in a shootout defeat to Czechia, while Poland’s 3-2 loss to Sweden likely marks the end of Robert Lewandowski’s international era.

As the June 11 kickoff approaches, the tournament prepares to welcome 48 teams, but the void left by these fallen empires will be felt globally.
