Jamie Carragher believes that neither Michael Carrick nor Liam Rosenior possess the “special” qualities needed to lead Manchester United or Chelsea to a Premier League title, instead backing Eddie Howe as a superior permanent option for the Red Devils.
Following the recent managerial appointments at two of England’s biggest clubs, Jamie Carragher has sparked debate by dismissing the chances of Manchester United and Chelsea winning the Premier League title under Michael Carrick and Liam Rosenior.
Carrick, who was named United’s caretaker manager following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month, enjoyed a sensational start with a 2-0 derby win over Manchester City, yet Carragher insists the former midfielder is not the “special” appointment required for long-term success.
The Liverpool legend applied the same logic to Chelsea’s new boss, Liam Rosenior—who replaced Enzo Maresca and has won two of his first three games—stating, ‘I don’t believe Man Utd will win the league with Carrick, or Chelsea will with Liam Rosenior.
I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but you have to be special.’
While dismissing the current incumbents, Carragher identified Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe as a prime candidate for the permanent Old Trafford vacancy, praising his tactical coaching and ability to handle the intense media pressure associated with a massive club.
Despite the pundit’s skepticism, Carrick remains in charge for the remainder of the season, with his next major test coming this Sunday against title favorites Arsenal.
