Joan Laporta accused Real Madrid players of frequent diving, while the capital club focused on seeking sanctions for racial abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during their Champions League victory over Benfica.
Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta ignited fresh controversy between Spain’s two biggest clubs by accusing Real Madrid of receiving favorable refereeing and diving to win penalties.
“These others, they learned how to swim, they dive into the pool beautifully,” Laporta stated, suggesting officials have been “scandalously” partial toward Los Blancos.
He further alleged that refereeing inconsistencies are part of a wider effort to halt Barcelona’s success, claiming officials frequently penalize the Catalans.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s 1-0 win at Benfica was overshadowed by alleged racial abuse from opponent Gianluca Prestianni toward Vinícius Júnior.
The Brazilian star, who scored the winning goal, hit out at “cowardly racists” after the match was halted for 11 minutes due to UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.
Real Madrid has confirmed full support for the winger, with the club vowing to push for severe sanctions as UEFA launches an official investigation.
